America is getting older and is facing a huge problem: brain disorders. Providing medicines to the brain has always been a challenging task in several fields of medicine. Drugs that specifically target the brain and spinal cord must pass the blood-brain barrier. The blood-brain barrier is impermeable to most therapeutic proteins, antibodies, and 98% of small molecules in order to maintain a stable environment.
Neurotoxins are able to effectively pass the blood-brain barrier and concentrate in the central nervous system. The toxin concentration in the nervous system suggests that these neurotoxins are actively pumped into the brain. Analyzing neurotoxins' natural structure, we found that some of them have a similar structure, which we call the “brain tag”.
